My mother asked me why do you think men like your grandfather were attracted to you? Yes, my mother is a jewel, isn’t she? Her victim blaming questions stopped me in my tracks. It took my breath away. It was a punch in the gut honestly, but I wasn’t surprised.

Appearances are everything to my mother. When my husband died February 18th, 2018, his parents’ names were published before mine in the death notice. She was livid and made sure I knew about it. The flowers my uncle sent for his funeral weren’t as big as he said they were going to be, and she spent an hour making rude comments about them. From there she informed me that she had suffered like I was suffering because she’s been divorced three times. She said this with tears in her eyes.

When my younger sister died from kidney failure February 16th, 2021, my mother never showed up. However. She did send flowers when the rest of us were worried about Susie taking her last breath, she was worried about what people thought about the flowers. My sister passed and she was upset that my father’s other children were a part of her funeral arrangements. We, as siblings, paid for our sister’s funeral because she didn’t have the money to do it.

Back to my mother’s questions. There was nothing about me that made me a target other than being a little…
