The story of Ronald Lamont Boykin
On June 6th, 1967, Johnnie Mae Boykin was at her home at 8920 Little River Drive in Miami Florida when she got a knock at the door. Her husband, Otis, and her son, Luther were sleeping when she got a visit from a public health nurse. She wanted to do a health check on Boykin’s 6-week-old son, Ronald. The meeting had been set up by phone the day before, so it wasn’t a surprise to the mother of two when a black nurse in a pretty yellow dress showed up.
Johnnie had dealt with public health nurses in the past when Luther was born so she didn’t question the nurse being there. The nurse took off Ronald’s diaper and gave him an examination like she knew what she was doing. She made inquiries about the two year old and really wanted to see Luther.
The nurse left telling Johnnie that she would be back later to take the baby for his shots.
She returned between 1:30 PM and 2:00 PM she wrapped Ronald up and told Johnnie she would bring him back after she was finished. Johnnie watched the nurse get into a silver late 1960s Buick Sedan with a black man and drive away.
