Evelyn Grace Hartley was the youngest child and only daughter of Richard and Ethel Hartley. She had two older brothers, Richard, and Thomas. Evelyn, better known as Evie, was not the only child the Hartley’s would lose. Richard passed away of polio on September 5th, 1946, while in the Navy and stationed at Rhode Island. Thomas, the remaining child, would follow his father and become a biologist.
