Unsolved Murder of a Catholic Nun

She deserved better.

On December 23rd, 1964, one Sister Carmelita Mattingly age 66 was crossing KY Hwy 144 from the Catholic Nuns Home to Saint Williams Catholic School when someone struck her with their vehicle. This is in Knottville Kentucky, Daviess County. A part of her habit was found in Thruston Kentucky about 8 miles away but still in Daviess County.

From Find A Grave

There isn’t much information out there on the crime, but Sister Carmelita was born on May 15th, 1898, to William and Mary Mattingly. Her birth name was Mary Bridget “Mae” Mattingly. She was 1 of 14 children with only two of the Mattingly siblings dying as babies. I am not sure when she became an Ursuline sister and changed her name to Sister Carmelita Mattingly.

This case bothers me badly. She made such an impression on so many children that they joined the church as nuns and priests. If anyone has any information, please contact Daviess County Sheriff’s Office at 270–685–8444

I couldn’t find a picture of Sister Carmelita. There was a picture but it turned out to be one of her sister who also became a nun. It is easy to post the wrong thing if you don’t double check facts.
